ROCHESTER — Things got out of control for the Packer football team in the second quarter of a 60-6 loss at Rochester Century Friday.

After Austin stopped the Panthers (3-0 overall) on two of their three first quarter possessions — Century scored on four straight possessions in the second quarter.

Ben Harney kicked a 38-yard field goal to make it 23-0 with 1:48 to play, Austin went three-and-out and Century quarterback Nick Beise found Kristofer Sveum on a 25-yard touchdown pass to cap a three play, 49-yard drive that took just under 35 seconds to make it 30-0.

“They’ve put up a lot of points on very good teams,” Austin head coach Matt Schmit said. “They’re very good and there are very few holes on their offense and defense.”

Century added two more touchdowns and a safety in the third quarter and Austin’s offense didn’t get a first down until the Panthers pulled their starters late in the third.

While they couldn’t get much going, Schmit was pleased that his team never gave up.

“The kids played as hard as they could and for that I’m really proud of them,” he said. “It’s hard to go into a game and lose as bad as we did and finish. They played hard every minute of the game and I wasn’t disappointed in the effort. I was disappointed in the score.”

Austin (0-3 overall, 0-2 Big Nine) got its first points of the season when Anthony Condit rolled right to punt on fourth and 18 in the fourth quarter and instead took off down the right sideline, before cutting up the middle for a 62-yard score against Century’s reserves to make it a 45-6 game.

“He has an option to run or kick. I wouldn’t have called that but he saw it, he ran it and he made a good play,” Schmit said.
