Violet L. Wood, 87, of Austin died Monday Aug. 23, 2010, at St. Marks Lutheran Home.

Violet was born April 14, 1923. in Lakefield to Walter and Lydia (Bretzman) Malchow. She attended Lakefield High School and was married to Richard E. Wood on Nov. 14, 1948, at St. Johns Lutheran Church. Violet was a waitress, working at the Rose Room and as the manager of the Lunch Counter at the Woolworths Department Store. She also worked as a clerk at the T&L Market and the Ankeny’s Mini Mart.

Violet was a good cook and loved to entertain and having the family home for the holidays. She also enjoyed breakfasts at Perkins, playing cards and trips to the casino.

Violet was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard E. Wood and am infant son Dean.

She is survived by her children, Dennis Wood, Grand Rapids; Mavis Wood (Lou Vidmar) Colorado, Springs, Colo.; Dale (Kim) Wood, Lake City; Shirley Springer, Walker, La.; Patty (Dale) Lundberg, Austin; 14 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; brother, Wallace (Helen) Malchow, Austin; sister. Marilyn (Elmer) Olund, Austin; sisters-in-law, Viola Walterman, Austin; Lucille Kilgore, Adams; brother-in-law, Merlyn Franke, Dunedin, Fla., many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 AM Monday, Aug. 30 at St. Johns Lutheran Church with Pastor Tom Ogilvie officiating, Interment will be at Grandview Cemetery. Friends may call at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday and at the church for one hour before the service on Monday.
