Nels Nelson pitched a one-hitter but it wasn’t enough as the Blue Sox saw their season come to an end in the first round of the Class ‘B’ state baseball tournament after a 1-0 loss to Shakopee in Willmar Saturday.
Shakopee (33-`15 overall) scored its run in the fourth inning when Troy Wasiloski struck out but reached on a passed ball and scored on a single by Brandon Weigel.
This is the second year in a row that the Blue Sox fell in the first round of the state tournament.
“You expect to win when your pitcher throws a one-hitter,” Blue Sox manager Josh Kunze said. “We don’t feel good about just playing well, that makes it more disapointing because we had some of the best pitching in this tournament.”
The Blue Sox (20-10 overall) had just four hits and they committed two errors in the loss.
Matt Raso had two singles and Kyle Young had a base hit for Austin, which never had a runner get past second base.
Nelson pitched eight innings, allowing just the one hit, one walk, and zero earned runs while striking out six in the loss to the defending state champs.
