Winona sweeps Austin Post 91 in baseball doubleheader

Austin Post 91 just couldn’t get it done when it dropped both games of a doubleheader by scores of 30-6 and 8-1 to Winona at Marcusen Park Friday.

The LeJetz had racked up 60 hits in their three previous games before coming to Austin and they finished with five homeruns and 37 total hits in the sweep of Post 91 (4-11 overall).

Austin finished with 14 errors, while amassing just 13 hits in the two games.

“It was a combination of bad defense, bad pitching, and bad hitting,” Post 91 manager Bob Stratton said.

Both games started badly for Austin.

In the opener, Winona scored four runs with two outs as Jared Gilbertson tripled in two runs and scored on a dropped fly ball by Austin to make it 4-0.

Post 91 may have escaped the damage in the first inning when they had Ryan Woodard in a run down, but they couldn’t catch Woodard as he got back to first and eventually scored on a bloop single by Steve Tofstad, who had five hits, two homers and eight RBIs in the first game.

The second game saw Austin starter Brady Klingfus allow three runs in the first inning, but Klingfus did recover to hold the LeJetz at bay the rest of the way.

“Brady played OK and it wasn’t too bad,” Stratton said. “We just didn’t get the timely hit and that’s how it’s been lately.”

Austin had crept to within 8-6 in the opener after Jay Ettinger blooped a single to score a run in the fifth. But Austin left runners on second and third in the fifth and Winona responded by scoring six in the top of the sixth.

Winona sent 21 hitters to the plate in their 16-run seventh inning in the opener and Joe Miller and Jordan Romine both homered in the frame.

Austin’s game scheduled for Monday against Stewartville has been canceled and Post 91 will host Kasson Tuesday at 7 p.m.
