Police agencies throughout the Midwest completed a multi-state, multi-jurisdictional crackdown to address impaired driving Friday night. The I-94 Corridor Traffic Enforcement Project featured high-visibility enforcement activity by multiple law enforcement agencies in seven states on over 1,500 miles of Interstate 94. The initiative was conducted in conjunction with the 2010 Drunk Driving. Over The Limit. Under Arrest. impaired driving crackdown.

“The crackdown focused on Interstate 94 and consisted of a coordinated, multi-jurisdiction, high-visibility enforcement effort during a relatively short time frame,” according to Michael Witter, Midwest Regional Administrator for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The enforcement crackdown took place on Friday, July 2nd and Saturday July 3rd between 8:00pm-4:00 am, central standard time. State, county, and local law enforcement agencies from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana participated in the effort.

“Interstate 94 was identified as an enforcement priority due to the volume of crashes and subsequent injuries and deaths that have resulted. The multi-state nature of the road was also a factor in choosing it,” Witter added.

“While the primary focus of this enforcement effort was to arrest impaired drivers, law enforcement also ticketed unbelted motorists and speeders and cited other violators,” Witter concluded.

Preliminary arrest data generated from Friday night’s seven-state enforcement effort is as follows:

DUI/DWI:

Open Intoxicants in Vehicle: 7

Driver Citations:

Seatbelt, (including child safety seat): 23

Aggressive Driving: 164
