COTTAGE GROVE — Authorities say the man killed by police officers in Cottage Grove was the target of a weapons investigation.

Department of Public Safety spokesman Doug Neville told reporters Thursday the man was a known felon.

The incident began about 11 p.m. Wednesday when seven members of the Washington County special response team stopped a car on a residential street in Cottage Grove. Investigators say the man got out and refused to follow orders from the officers, four of whom opened fire. They’re not saying yet if he had a weapon or threatened the officers. He died at the scene
