Bryan Toov put on a marathon performance on the mound, but he couldn’t quite finish it as the Greyhounds hung on to beat the Mankato Mets 7-6 on the road Wednesday.

Toov threw 141 pitches and allowed just two earned runs, but the Hounds (7-6 overall) had to go to reliever John Kirby to get the last out.

“I don’t know what I was getting myself into,” Toov said. “I didn’t plan on going that long but I got close to finishing it. It’s been a while since I’ve thrown that much.”

Kirby walked the first hitter he saw to load the bases and he struck out the last hitter of the game to give Austin the win.

The Hounds scored a big insurance run in the top of the ninth when Adam Hemann, who had three RBIs on the night, knocked in a run with a double.

The Hounds scored five runs in the first three innings as Hemann had a two-run single in the third and Matt Cano knocked in a run with a first inning double.

Hounds manager John Frein said the team had confidence in Toov on the hill.

“We normally don’t like to leave a guy out there that long, but Bryan owned it and he was in control,” Frein said.

The Hounds will now take 10 days off before resuming play against Waseca July 10 and they will play the Blue Sox July 11.
