Deborah Schammel

Deborah Kay Schammel, 58, Rose Creek, died from bone cancer at her home on July 4, 2010, surrounded by her family.
She was born Sept. 21, 1951, in Austin to Corlos and Arlene (Wenzel) Hartwig. Debbie attended high school in Rose Creek and graduated from Mankato State College. Deborah married Robert (Rocky) William Schammel on Sept. 23, 1973, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin.
She was employed at the County Extension and County Corrections in Austin. She was also a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, a member of the choir and a Sunday school teacher. She was a member of 2nd Edition, a 4-H Cloverbud leader with 20 years of service and a 4-H volunteer as well as a gardener.
Her hobbies included gardening, scrapbooking, singing, sewing and enjoying her two grandsons.
Deb is survived by her husband, Rocky of Rose Creek; daughter, Sarah (Jeremy) Erickson of Puyallup, Wash.; son, Scott (Annie) Schammel of Rose Creek; grandchildren, Ethan Schammel and Jacob Erickson, each 1 year old; her mother and step-father, Arlene (Bob) Borchard of Mansfield, S.D.; brother, Ken (Becky) Hartwig of Rose Creek, Minn.; sisters, Brenda (Roger) Heimgartner of Rushford, Minn., and Sherry (Gary) Ehret of Eagan, Minn.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Irene Schammel of Rose Creek; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Corlos Hartwig.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 9, 2010, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Austin with Rev. Tom Ogilvie officiating. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Mayer Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
