ST. CLOUD — Twenty-six probationary faculty at St. Cloud State have received layoff notices as part of a push to cut 80 to 90 faculty jobs for the 2011 school year.

The St. Cloud Times reports that union contracts required that the notices be sent by Aug. 1 so the layoffs could happen at the end of this academic year.

Provost Devinder Malhotra says the 26 won’t all necessarily lose their jobs. She explains that after Aug. 1, SCSU can rescind layoff notices, but it can’t issue more of them.

If all 26 are, in fact, let go the university will save about $2 million. The faculty cuts come as the university tries to close a $13.7 million deficit for fiscal year 2012.
