Howard Schmidt

Howard Schmidt, age 87, of Mankato, died on Thursday, June 3, 2010, at Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospital.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Rev. Orlin Mandsager officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Austin. Landkamer-Johnson-Boman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials are preferred to Immanuel St. Joseph’s Hospice and the American Cancer Society.
Howard was born on March 20, 1923, in Walters, Minn. to Mark and Eva (Anderson) Schmidt. He graduated from Austin High School and attended Austin Junior College for two years. Howard enlisted in the United States Marine Corp and served in the 4th Marine Division. He served in World War II in the Pacific Theater and the Battle of Iwojima. He was united in marriage to Marian Jensen and they had two children. She passed on March 19, 1968. Howard then married Mary Bollenbacher. He worked as a salesman for Hormel for 25 years. He then worked in sales for Green Colonial Air Conditioning and Heating. Howard founded Schmidt Construction and finished his career as a manager with Culligan. He retired at the age of 70. Howard enjoyed fishing, golfing, music, dining out, and Saturday breakfasts.
Howard is survived by his son, Mark (Marge) Schmidt and their children Nicholas (Ann) Schmidt and Jodi Schmidt; daughter, Janet (William) Janssen and their children Angela (Brian) Zerngible and William H. Janssen; and step children, Peter (Michelle) Bollenbacher, John P. Bollenbacher, and Margaret A. Bollenbacher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first and second wife, and three brothers, Henry, Severt, and Donald.
