Adams’ annual Civil War Reenactment will be this weekend at the city park.

About 150 reenactors, some from as far away as Nebraska, are set to converge on Adams for the event which, for the first time, will be separate from Adams Dairy Days. The reenactment will feature a battle, artillery and drills from the era.

The camp opens to the public at 9 a.m. Saturday when there will be infantry and artillery drills. From 10 to 11:30 there will be demonstrations. Visitors can walk through the camps to view the reenactors and they’re welcome to ask questions.

“If they get too close, we just might make them a conscript — we’ll make them join the service,” joked organizer Bill Feuchtenberger, whose unit is Company H of the First South Carolina Provisional Army.

At 11:30 a.m. there will be a tea and fashion show. The battle will be from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by a medical demonstration.

The camp closes to the public at 5 p.m.

On Sunday, there will be infantry and artillery demonstrations throughout the morning, depending on the crowd. The battle reenactment will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. followed by medical demonstrations. The camp will close to the public Sunday at 4 p.m.

Feuchtenberger said he enjoys getting a chance to talk about the era with the public, and he also enjoys performing on the battlefield.

“If there’s a unit out there we know and get along with pretty well, we usually go at each other pretty hard, and that makes it kind of fun,” he said.

Feuchtenberger admits the timing for the event may not be perfect, as Sunday is Fathers’ Day and the Southland Rebels baseball team may be playing at the state tournament on Saturday. For reenactors, however, it’s the history that matters.

“To me, it’s important to keep this all eras of history alive, but particularly this one,” Feuchtenberger said. “The bottom line is it was us against each other.”
