COON RAPIDS — Austin senior Luke Hoefflin ended his prep career by sinking a 15-foot putt Wednesday and shooting even through the last four holes at the Class ‘AAA’ State Tournament, the same four holes that dealt him a six over par the day before.

After finishing the first two holes three over par, Hoefflin recovered, hitting putts and shooting a one under on the back nine.

He finished the tournament with a 154, one stroke better than he finished at sections, and tied for 21st place.

“Luke regrouped and got it together,” said head coach Will Pazurek of Hoefflin’s final 16 holes. “He just kept rolling.”

The biggest different between Hoefflin’s first and second round was the mental game, finishing the final four holes seven strokes better than the day before.

“He kept his composure this time,” Pazurek said. “It’s hard for anyone to play golf angry.”

Hoefflin say it as more than just better composure.

“I got revenge on those last holes,” he said, laughing. “I felt more relaxed and confident.”

Everything positive from Hoefflin’s first round rolled over to Wednesday, especially the short game, crescendoed until his final putt found the bottom of the cup from 15 feet away.

“His putting was great,” Pazurek said. “Luke put the right up to the hole, sometimes just burning the edge a little.”

Charlie Braniff of St. Cloud Tech won the Class ‘AAA’ title with a two-day score of 142.
