The screening will take place at St. Edward’s Corcoran Center, 2001 Second Ave. NW, Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children under 6 years old and pregnant and nursing women.

Medical professionals will perform the capillary finger sticks to determine levels of lead in blood.

According to the Sustainable Resources Center, the following children could be at risk for lead poisoning: those under 6; those who live in a home built before 1978; those who live in homes where painted surfaces have recently been scraped, sanded or repaired; those who have moved from another country or a big city in the past year; and those who have a sibling or playmate with lead in their blood.

Lead test results from Medtox labs arrive one to two weeks after screening. Health education staff will call each family to report and discuss results. Families will also receive a copy of results in the mail.
