ADAMS — It wasn’t too exciting when the Rebels baseball team took the lead for good against Plainview/Elgin/Millville Monday, but it was dramatic when they put the game away.

Alan May belted a three-run homer with two outs to left-center field to make it 8-4 in the fifth inning to vault Southland (10-3 overall) to an 11-4 win over P/E/M in Adams.

May hit the homer off of P/E/M’s Cole Olstad, who had come on in relief for the Bulldogs (7-4 overall).

“He threw me a good first pitch fast ball and I should’ve took it, but I left it,” May said. “Then he threw the same pitch and I made him pay for it.”

May’s homer was set up when Trevor Emanuel and Lee Kloeckner drew back-to-back two-out walks to extend the inning.

“We needed a big hit there and the bottom of the order did a good job of getting on base,” May said. “P/E/M is a pretty good team and this is a big win for us.”

Alan May gave Southland a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning when he singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.

Southland head coach Scott Retterath was a little worried about how his team would play, since they didn’t practice on Friday and Southland held its prom over the weekend.

“Today’s game scared me quite a bit and I knew coming into this game that it would be a good test for us. (P/E/M) is a quality team and they’re a lot like we are,” Retterath said. “The kids responded pretty well.”

Southland jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first second inning after Alan May and Adam Kiefer came up with back-to-back two-out, run scoring singles.

P/E/M tied the game in the third when it knocked starter Mitch Nagele out of the game by putting the first three hitters on base. Southland relief pitcher Chris May came in and slammed the door shut as he struck out nine in four innings without allowing a run.

“I just worked on getting ahead and then I gave them some off-speed pitches, which they swung and missed on,” Chris May said. “I knew I had to get some outs.”

Retterath was hoping to save Chris May for the game against Dover/Eyota Tuesday night.

“I was kind of hoping to use Chris tomorrow night, but it just didn’t seem like Mitch was on top of his game tonight, so we went with Chris a little earlier than we had planned,” he said.

Southland has now won seven straight games.
