Property tax deadline extended

Mower County residents will have one extra day to file their property taxes this month.

The Mower County Board of Commissioners approved a change to push back the due date of property tax statements May 18. Property taxes for the first half of the year are typically due May 15, but since that falls on a Saturday this year, they are due on May 17. However, tax statements were mailed out late due to complications in a new software program in the Mower County Auditor-Treasurer’s office.

With the change in the due date, penalties for late taxes won’t begin until the May 19.

The tax statements need to be mailed out 20 days before they’re due. The county missed that mark by one day, so citizens will not be penalized if they submit the tax statements by May 18.
