More than 30 mailboxes have been reported as damaged or destroyed by vandalism over the weekend.

Tuesday, seven mailboxes were reported destroyed in front of Kiker Bros., 24036 534th Ave., north of Austin.

Destruction, likely by club, of the six metal boxes and one plastic one resulted in $210 in damage, said Austin police Lt. John Mueller.

Police arrested a 20-year-old Austin man Sunday for allegedly damaging about 25 mailboxes during the weekend — causing an estimated $1,500 in damage.

As of Wednesday afternoon, he had not yet been charged in court.

Police stopped the man and two others, ages 18 and 20, before 10 p.m. Sunday after a resident in the 2400 block of 10th Avenue Southwest reported that people in a white SUV were damaging a mailbox.

The 20-year-old driver was cited for obstruction of legal process and officers used a chemical spray before arresting him, Mueller said.

Officers found a baseball bat in the vehicle as well as other items that could be used to damage mailboxes, Mueller said.

The two other men were interviewed and released.
