The Austin Chapter of the Izaak Walton League holds another steak cookout Wednesday — this time to benefit the Austin Mill Pond Rain Garden Project.

The $17,000 project includes the planting of approximately 1.5 acres of native prairie plants along the northwest side of the pond, acting as a buffer to pollutants and reducing rainfall runoff. It will also be utilized as an outdoor classroom by Austin High School students, according to the local chapter.

The cookout will be held at the Izaak Walton Cabin at Todd Park, beginning at 5:45 p.m.

In addition to the Izaak Walton League, rain garden project partners include the Austin Park and Recreation Department, Austin Public Schools, Mower County Water and Soil Conservation District, Cedar River Watershed District, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, A.C.E.S. and Spruce-Up Austin.

Steak cookouts represent the main fundraising avenue for the Austin Chapter of the Izaak Walton League, which is a non-profit conservation organization whose mission is to conserve, maintain, protect, and restore all soil, waters, wildlife, and other natural resources.

The remaining four steak cookouts will be held June 30, July 28, September 15, and October 6.
