Documentary to raise money for memorial

The Veteran’s Committee is showing the documentary “The Conscientious Objector” in Austin High School’s Knowlton Auditorium at 7 p.m. Tuesday to raise money for the Veterans’ Memorial.

“The whole evening is about honoring our veterans and all Americans,” said Peter Handke, who is organizing the event.

The film’s title may be misleading to some. The documentary tells the story of Medal of Honor winner Pvt. First Class Desmond T. Doss. While Doss had a strong desire to serve his country, he refused to carry a weapon and was labeled a conscientious objector. Serving as a medic at Okinawa during World War II, Doss saved the lives of many wounded Americans and was wounded himself.

“This is a film that really honors those who served in the military,” Handke said.

All proceeds from the event are set to go toward the statue to be the centerpiece of the memorial. If the auditorium sells out Tuesday, Handke said the fundraiser would earn about $9,000. The committee has to sell 600 pavers to raise enough money to purchase the statue. Work to install the first 260 pavers sold so far recently began at the memorial.

Tickets for the film are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. Tickets are available in advance at Hy-Vee and the Austin Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information about the event, call Handke at 507-258-0555. People are also welcome to donate money to the project.
