DCTC takes MCAC South Title in sweep over Riverland baseball team

It was a worst case scenario for the Riverland Community College baseball team as it was swept by Dakota County by scores of 12-1 and 14-7 at Dick Seltz Field Wednesday.

With the wins, DCTC (27-10 overall, 12-2 MCAC South) clinches the Southern Division Title. DCTC had five home runs, nine doubles and one triple on the day, while RCC’s only two homers came after DCTC had taken a 13-2 lead in the nightcap.

“I can’t explain it. We’ve played our four worst gamesall year against these guys,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “The thing that upsets me the most is our at-bats. We worked hard the last couple of days on getting accustomed to harder pitching and I thought guys were swinging the bats pretty good.”

The Blue Devils (32-8 overall, 9-5 MCAC South) scored twice in the fifth to pull within 4-2 in the nightcap after Winston Smith doubled in a run and Brian Voigt knocked in a run with single. But DCTC sent 13 hitters to the plate while scoring nine runs in the top of the sixth.

Both Riverland starters, Kyal Williams and Tyler Jones, allowed over 10 hits and at least nine runs.

“When pitchers don’t hit their spots against good hitters, they bash the ball around a little bit,” Koenigs said.

The Blue Devils will now focus on getting second place in the MCAC South and a possible No. 2 overall seed when they host Rochester Saturday. RCC will have their top two hurlers, Brian Voigt and Mitch Jaeger, on the mound for that doubleheader.

“We have to regroup and sweep Rochester and get the second seed in the conference,” Koenigs said. “We’ve got to let this go.”

The Blue Devils have clinched a spot to the state tournament and their hoping to get some good matchups when they get there.

“The last three weeks, we haven’t seen anything but everybody’s one or two pitcher,” he said. “It would be nice in the tournament to end up playing one of Dakota’s third our fourth pitchers.”
