HAYFIELD — It was almost a perfect day for the Blooming Prairie softball team.

They ran their winning streak up to 15 straight victories and they won the Hayfield Invite. But junior pitcher Erica Manske couldn’t help but notice up the one hit she gave up in a 3-0 win over Kenyon/Wanamingo in the title game Saturday.

Manske struck out 14 and only allowed one ball out of the infield against the Knights (6-12 overall), but Maddie Mclain became the only K/W hitter to reach base when she beat out a bunt hit by a split second on a close play at first base to lead off the fourth inning.

“It kind of sucks (to miss out on the perfect game), but we won so that’s all that really matters,” Manske said. “I watched them play before us so I knew what to expect from their lineup and what to do with them.”

Mclain was thrown out on a double play after BP catcher Hunter Henderson caught a foul pop up and fired to first on the very next play.

BP did all of its offensive damage against the Knights in the first two innings. Anna Peterson doubled and scored on a single by Kelly Peterson in the first and Julia Magnes and Sdni Olson scored on a two-out K/W throwing error after Magnes stole second base in the second.

BP head coach Ali Mach was glad to add three more wins to her team’s total.

“It was a good day and we played well, but it was a little tiresome and the kids had a long day,” she said. “It’s nice to get a chance against a subsection team like Kenyon/Wanamingo and beat them.”

Mach thought about splitting time between Manske and freshman Shelbi Swenson on them mound in the title game, but she liked what she saw out her ace.

“I thought we might run both pitchers, but Erica was pitching so nicely and she had a great game. It was good to get her some extra work,” Mach said.

BP (17-2 overall) opened the tournament with a 6-5 win over Pine Island. The Blossoms trailed 4-2 in the fourth when Tricia DeBoer singled and a run scored on an error and Anna Peterson knocked in a run with two-out single. BP took a 6-4 lead in the fifth when it scored two runs on passed balls.

BP’s win over Pine Island was called after six innings, due to time restraints.

The Blossoms cruised in the second round with a 12-2 win over Hayfield in five innings.

“I’m happy with the way we’re playing right now and the wins come with that,” Mach said. “We’ve been playing well defensively and offensively and we’ll still have a week to work on some things before playoffs.”

Manske said that her team is ready for the postseason, which begins Saturday, May 29.

“We’re playing our best ball at the right time. Everything is going real well,” she said.
