The Austin boys tennis team had its No. 1 doubles team of Jacob Brehmer and Bobby Astrup advance out of the individual sub-section tournament in Northfield Thursday.

Brehmer and Astrup, both seniors, were seeded No. 2 and they beat Aaron Stets and Anders Carlson of Northfield in the second round 6-4, 6-3 and topped the top Northfield duo of Scott Abdella and Bonus Buil 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in the finals.

“Bob and Jake played the best match of their high school career to beat these guys,” Austin head coach Thomas Tauchnitz said. “I’m very proud of both of them. They have worked so hard for this.”

Brehmer and Astrup will play in the Section 1AA tournament in Red Wing 9 a.m. with a chance at state on the line.

In other action, Austin’s Josh Detwiller and Matt Duren each won a match but fell short in the semifinals and Peter Lindahl and Matt Zastoupil won a match but lost in the semis.

Astrup, Brehmer and Lindahl made the All-Big Nine tennis team, while Astrup and Ryan Rasell won the Big Nine Scholar Athlete Award.
