Mya Burkhart said she just got some “awesome” news.

On Tuesday, the 8-year-old learned that her design had been picked as the official logo for this summer’s Freedom Fest, meaning her flag drawing will be all over T-shirts and other marketing materials during the Fourth of July celebration.

The second-grade student said her artistic vision was simple.

“I wanted something Fourth of July-ey,” Burkhart said. “And I wanted an American flag.”

For Burkhart, art is nothing new — she said it is her favorite subject in school, and Burkhart’s mom, Sara Burkhart, added that Mya’s kitchen art cabinet gets a lot of use.

But winning an art contest is something new for Mya Burkhart, and the news was well received by Sara Burkhart, as well as Mya’s siblings, 12-year-old Jacob and 10-year-old Hannah.

“We were very excited,” Sara Burkhart said. “And we were just very proud she won.”

Mya said she’s looking forward to having her logo seen by so many people.

“I just thought it’d be cool to be on a T-shirt and in the Fourth of July parade,” she said.

Also very cool was Mya’s prize — for having the winning design, she was awarded $100 in Chamber of Commerce Bucks Thursday. Good at a number of local retailers, the gift certificates present a good challenge for the young artist — where to spend them?

“I don’t know yet,” Mya Burkhart said with a smile from ear to ear.

Jeff Baldus, the festival’s director, said the T-shirt contest idea is new this year, but it’s something he’d like to see continue down the road. Also noteworthy this year is the festival’s age — Freedom Fest is celebrating 25 years in 2010.

“Twenty-five years is quite a milestone,” Baldus said of the event, which will run from July 2 to 4 this summer. “The name has changed over the years, but the theme remains the same — the festival celebrates family, community and country.”
