The Blue Devils’ hitting slump is a thing of the past.

After struggling with their bats at times this week, the Riverland baseball team came booming out of its slumber by beating Western Wisconsin Technical College 14-2 and 21-4 in La Crosse Wednesday.

The No. 4 ranked Blue Devils (30-6 overall) got nine homers on the day from the top three hitters in their lineup and RCC pumped out 40 hits.

“(WWTC’s) pitching wasn’t that bad and we’ve definitely seen worse this year,” RCC head coach Scott Koenigs said. “We just had great at-bats and didn’t swing at pitches out of the zone. We made their pitchers come to us and it was one of our best hitting days of the year.”

Shawn Pape, who is from Winona, drilled three homers and eight RBIs in the second game while playing in front his family, Brian Voigt had two homers in each game and Kyle Young had two homers on the day.

Voigt now has 16 homers on the year, shattering the previous RCC record of eight, which was set by Brandon Huhn two years ago. Young, who is from Forest Lake, Minn., has 11 homers on the year.

On the mound, Austin grad Dylan Monson picked up his first collegiate win when he went four innings in the nightcap and struck out two.
