ADAMS — The Rebels baseball team didn’t bash the ball around a lot, but they did it when it counted in a 13-3 win in five innings over Lewiston/Altura in Adams Monday.

After Southland left runners on second and third in a scoreless first inning, the bottom of the order gave the squad a boost. Grant Hegge reached on a bunt single in the second inning and Lee Kloeckner drew a walk and then Southland catcher and No. 9 hitter Clint Bergene blasted a three-run homer over the left field fence to make it 4-0.

“It was a pitch I usually look for, it was a low in the zone straight fast ball and it was pretty slow,” Bergene said.

Southland (2-0 overall, 2-0 Three Rivers) scored two more in the second inning to make it 5-0 and it took a 10-0 lead in the bottom of the third.

Hegge walked and scored on an error to start the third inning, Kloeckner and Bergene reached on back-to-back errors and Alan May crushed a home run to deep left field to make it 9-0.

“We started out slow in our first game and it helped us out a lot to get it going right away tonight,” Bergene said. “We want to keep it rolling and keep hitting. Tomorrow we’ve got Chatfield and we don’t want to stop.”

The Rebels finished with seven hits, but drew a total of nine walks to kick-start their offense.

After the Cardinals scored three runs in the fourth, Southland’s Adam Kiefer knocked in two runs with a single down the left field line and he scored on a wild pitch to set up the 10-run rule.

On the mound, Mitch Nagele got the start for Southland and he didn’t allow a hit in the first three innings before L/A got to him in the fourth. Alan May picked up the win in relief by striking out four.

Southland head coach Scott Retterath was pleased with his team’s overall effort in the win.

“We played better defensively and our base running has improved dramatically over last week already,” he said. “Hitting and pitching is most of the high school game and we did both pretty well today.”
