The Austin baseball team dropped a pair of games at Rochester Mayo by scores of 12-2 and 9-8 Thursday.

The Spartans (3-1 overall, 2-1 Big Nine) won the nightcap when Austin dropped a pop fly to start the bottom of the seventh and the Packers couldn’t hang on to a fly ball at the warning track that allowed the winning run to score.

Austin (0-4 overall, 0-4 Big Nine) led 7-4 in the bottom of the fifth with two outs when Steve Serratore belted a three-run homer.

Brady Klingfus scored on a Mayo throwing error on a bunt single by Mike Tindal to make it 8-7 Austin in the top of the sixth, but Mayo tied it in the bottom of the sixth when Jordan Ziegler hit a solo home run.

Austin pitchers walked 20 batters in the doubleheader.

“The strike zone may have been a little small, but we’ve got to adjust to that and throw strikes,” Austin head coach Troy Watkins said.
