Mathilda Schumacher

Mathilda Anna “Tillie” Schumacher, 97, of Austin, died Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at Sacred Heart Care Center where she was a resident.
Tillie was born Aug. 14, 1912 in Canby, Yellow Medicine County, Minn. to Mathias and Katheryn (Meyer) Kerling. In 1921 her family moved to Austin. Her early education was at Columbus School. Tillie married Lawrence Schumacher on May 19, 1931 at St. Augustine Catholic Church. They were married for 58 years. Lawrence passed away on May 12, 1989.
Prior to raising her family, Mathilda worked at Hormel Foods. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and enjoyed her participation in church unit meetings for many years. She had many hobbies including fishing, hunting, travel, cards and visiting with family and friends.  Mathilda called Sacred Heart Care Center her home for the last several years. There she continued to enjoy receiving visitors and sharing her wit and love with family and friends.
Survivors include five children, Richard Schumacher of rural Austin, Dolores (Norm) Norring of Shakopee, Ralph (Cathy) Schumacher of Rosemount, Roland (Barbara) Schumacher of Austin, Robert (Donna) Schumacher of Rochester; 14 grandchildren, Mark (Diane) Schumacher, Calvin (Amy) Schumacher, Karl (Allamay) Schumacher, Christina (Michael) Kanne, Edward Schumacher, Margaret (Bruce) Glover, Melissa (Paul) Jacoby, Tony Schumacher, Karen Sue Chiginsky, Michelle (John) Linden, Randy Schumacher, Wendy Schumacher, Gretchen (Robert) Freeman, Tyson Schumacher; 16 great-grandchildren, Daniel Schumacher, Rebekah Schumacher, Michael Schumacher, Nathan Schumacher, Nickolas Schumacher, Krista Schumacher, Kensington Schumacher, Skye Kanne, Paige Kanne, Faith Ann Kanne, Brooke Jacoby, Seth Jacoby, Miranda Jacoby, April Sue Chiginsky, Cameron Morrell, Maxwell Freeman; brothers, Leo (Ramona) Kerling, Vernon Kerling; sisters, Adeline (Clinton) Christianson, Lucille (Donald) Ramlo; sisters-in-law, Frances (Albert) Kerling, Violet Kerling.
In addition to her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Mathias Kerling, Edward Kerling, Albert Kerling, Donald Kerling; sister, Esther Bellrichard; brother-in-law, Donald Bellrichard; sisters-in-law, Georgette Kerling, Pat Kerling; daughter-in-law, Ruth Schumacher.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 2, 2010 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the church on Sunday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
