The Austin Chapter 10 of the Izaak Walton League offers steak and gardening projects this week.

The local chapter hosts their first Steak Cookout Fundraiser of the season Wednesday at 5:45. The same day, from 4 to 6 p.m., the group will give away free tree seedlings and saplings.

The trees — Red Oak, Burr Oak, Shagbark Hickory and Wild Plum among them — will be given away for free at the Izaak Walton Cabin in Todd Park.

The dinner — 10 oz. sirloin steak, baked potato, coleslaw, bun and fresh vegetables — costs $12 and is the main fundraising avenue of the organization. Proceeds of the first cookout help provide scholarships for area youth to attend summer camps at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center near Lanesboro, Minn.

Both of the events are open to the public, and you can attend both, or one or the other.

All species of the free seedlings and saplings are native to the area and are great for attracting wildlife.

They are bare-root and should be planted immediately after pick-up. If they cannot be planted that evening, they can be stored in a cool dark place up to two days; roots should be kept moist and can be placed in a plastic bag.

Approximately 100 trees will be available on a first come first serve basis.

Tickets to the cookout are available at the door or by contacting an Ike member.

This is the fifth year that Austin Chapter 10 has provided scholarships to Eagle Bluff.

Eagle Bluff summer camps give students the opportunity to learn about nature and develop outdoor skills such as canoeing, fishing, and camping.

Austin Chapter 10 of the Izaak Walton League is a nonprofit conservation organization whose mission is to conserve, maintain, protect, and restore all soil, waters, wildlife, and other natural resources.
