ROSE CREEK — The Southland softball team showed some good signs but it wasn’t enough as it dropped both games of a doubleheader to Chatfield by scores of 11-6 and 9-1 in Rose Creek Monday.

The Rebels (1-2 overall) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first game but Chatfield (2-1 overall) took advantage of two Rebel errors to score five times in the fourth and the Gophers scored four runs after there were two outs and nobody on in the sixth inning to put the game away.

Southland took a 6-3 lead when Brandi Schammel doubled and Jenna Juneger knocked her in with one out single, but Emily Howton hit into a double play to end the inning and Southland never scored the rest of the way.

“I believe we have a lot of room for improvement,” Southland head coach Greg Shulte said. “Every game we see different things we can work on and right now it seems to be rolling over from last year, where we always give up one big inning.”

Southland scored first in the second game when Kelli Smith singled and scored on a two-out hit by Whitney Bamrick in the top of the first. But the Rebels had just two hits over the next six innings as their offense struggled.

Chatfield scored three times in the first and in the second they rallied for four runs after having no body on and two outs.

Still Schulte is keeping his team focused on the positives.

“We showed really good things at times and we just have to get better every game,” Schulte said.

Bamrick, a junior, gave Southland solid play at shortstop as she fielded just about everything in her direction.

“She played exceptional today. She was very good defensively,” Schulte said.
