Donald Scharnweber

Donald D. Scharnweber, 83, of Cresco, Iowa passed away on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco. 
Donald Duane Scharnweber was born on July 1, 1926 in Wykoff, Minn., the second child of Edward and Lora (Schmeling) Scharnweber. The family moved to Cresco in 1930. Don attended school in Cresco, and after graduation he spent two years in the Army, where he spent time during the occupation of Japan. On June 23, 1948, he was united in marriage to Anna Mae (Ann) Kleve in St. Joseph’s Church in Cresco. To this union three children were born: Mark, Jane, and Joyce. They farmed north of Cresco for 41 years, retiring to Cresco in 1995.
Don was involved in many activities. He and his wife were charter members of the Cresco Squares, Square Dancing Club, and held the office of president several times. He was a lector, usher, and funeral usher for many years at St. Joseph’s Church. He was past chief ranger of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and chaplain of the American Legion. He was also very involved with the Historical Society and the Historical Museum at the Fairgrounds. He enjoyed many years of square dancing and the wonderful people associated with square dancing. He enjoyed his family, dancing, traveling, wood working, hunting and fishing.
He is survived by a son, Mark (Gloria) of West Branch, Iowa; two daughters, Jane (Lloyd) Johnson of Ostrander, Minn. and Joyce (fiancé Lyle Halverson) of Cresco, Iowa; six grandchildren, Aaron Scharnweber of Des Moines, Iowa, Edward Scharnweber of Wanamingo, Minn., Leah (Justin) Loomer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Jessica (Mitchell) Anderson of Stewartville, Minn., David Johnson of Woodbury, Minn. and Allan Johnson of Fargo, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann; his parents, Edward and Lora; and a sister, Lucille Briar.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 26, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Notre Dame Parish in Cresco. Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday afternoon at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco where there will be a 5 p.m. scripture service. Friends may also call one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Cresco.
