The United States Air Force brings its Heartland of America Band’s woodwind quintet to Austin next week.

Winds of Freedom performs a free concert at St. Edward’s Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Monday.

The quintet is composed of an oboe, flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon plus a percussionist and vocalist. They will perform marches, classical transcriptions and patriotic favorites at the concert.

“We think it’s going to be really popular,” said Sue Viehauser, parish coordinator at St. Edward’s.

Winds of Freedom is part of the USAF’s Heartland of America Band, based at the Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. Musicians are full-time, Active Duty members of the Air Force.

The group’s touring area encompasses an eight-state region, the largest geographical area of any regional stateside Air Force Band.

Playing the oboe will be Master Sgt. Nancy A. Montera; clarinetist will be Master Sgt. Nicole Shininger; playing the horn will be Technical Sgt. Hughey L. Hancock; tenor soloist will be Tech. Sgt. Kenneth G. Maxwell; playing the bassoon will be Staff Sgt. Jonathon B. Biccum; playing the flute will be Staff Sgt. Jennifer A. James; and percussionist will be Staff Sgt. Gary M. Steinberg.

Tickets to the Winds of Freedom concert are free and are available at the Austin Daily Herald, 310 2nd St. NE. Non-ticket holders will be seated after ticket holders.

The concert is sponsored by the Austin Daily Herald and St. Edward’s Catholic Church.
