Think you’re busy this weekend? Many area kids will work on the farm with llamas, spend time in the wood shop and prepare their spring garden beds — all before lunchtime Saturday.

It’s all in store at the annual “Mower County 4-H Project Day” Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Mower County Fairgrounds 4-H Building.

The free activity day is for children, in kindergarten through high school, to learn more about 4-H and 4-H projects, said Melissa Koch, Mower County 4-H program coordinator.

4-H starts in the third grade but there is also a Cloverbud Club for children in kindergarten through second grade. The project day will include activities for current and potential Cloverbuds.

4-H members and non-members are welcome Saturday.

“It’s a hands-on, fun day,” said Koch of the fourth-annual event.

Attendees will have time to participate in and learn about a variety of 4-H projects, including livestock, gardening and flowers, robotics, foods, geology and shop.

About 500 county students currently participate in 14 area 4-H clubs, Koch said. This represents a slight increase from last year.

4-H is a publicly funded program of University of Minnesota Extension. There is no membership fee but there are sometimes costs associated with projects.

“4-H is for everybody,” Koch said.
