In about six months, Austin’s new junior hockey team will begin play at Riverside Arena.

The franchise is the area’s first since the Mavericks left 25 years ago.

It’s a time of both uncertainty and excitement for Austin.

We don’t know how long the franchise will stay here, how good the team will be, how well the community will embrace it.

All we know at this point is that the city’s on board, that plans are in place and that this September, local fans will have a junior hockey team to call their own.

On Monday, the team’s name was announced — the Austin Bruins.

Since that announcement, reaction has been mixed.

Some fans feel it’s too much of a tribute to the Boston Bruins and not enough of an Austin original.

Other fans are OK with it and are simply excited junior hockey is back in town.

On Wednesday, franchise owner Craig Patrick unveiled the team’s logo, a fierce brown bear with teeth exposed and the words Austin Bruins above it.

As reported by the Herald’s Mike Rose Thursday, Patrick said that while the team will share the black and gold colors of the Boston franchise, the Austin team’s style will be its own.

Not everyone is going to like a team’s name or a team’s logo, but what I like is that Austin’s junior hockey team — six months out from the start of play — is already generating buzz and interest from the community.

That makes a big difference because a team can’t survive without the support of its fans.

And just remember, that regardless of what our name sounds like, the players taking the ice in September will be representing us, not anyone on the east coast.
