The Riverland softball team lost all three of its games in the Irish Dome in Rosemount Saturday.
The Blue Devils (4-5 overall) fell to Vermillion 9-5, lost to Central Lakes, which is ranked No. 6 in the nation, 8-0, and dropped an 8-0 decision to Itasca.
RCC allowed a total of 17 unearned runs in the three losses.
The errors hurt the most in the loss to Central Lakes, where RCC trailed just 1-0 in the fifth ining, when they committed four fielding errors and one throwing error to end the contest.
“We gave a ranked team eight outs in the inning and they ran off seven runs,” RCC head coach Dan Swift said. “That was the game.”
Against Vermillion, the Blue Devils led 1-0 early, but they walked Vermillion’s seven, eight and nine hitters a total of seven times to allow five runs.
Against Itasca, the Blue Devils couldn’t get their offense going.
“They threw their returning first team All-American pitcher and we struggled against her,” Swift said. “The high strike was being called and that gave a great advantage to a riseball pitcher, but most of our hitting woes had to do with their mind set — we look at who is pitching or who we are playing and walk into the game with an idea already in place that is not good. We need to go into games like we did in Florida — with the intent to win.”
