James E. Thorn, 82, of Blooming Prairie, died Saturday, March 6, 2010, at his home.
James Edward Thorn was born May 31, 1927 in Winona, Minn. to Harry E. and Laura M. (Kolb) Thorn. James graduated from Winona High School in 1945 and entered the US Navy, serving from 1945-1949 in the Pacific Theater. James returned home and completed his bachelor’s at Winona State Teachers College; his master’s at Winona State College; and his specialist degree for education administration at Winona State University. On Aug. 16, 1952, he married Lorine Rolfing at Immaculate Conception Church in Wilson, Minn. James taught in Lakefield, Roseville, Kasson-Mantorville and was principal in Blooming Prairie from 1969 to 1990. James was a member of St. Columbanus Catholic Church and a member of American Legion Post 52 and Veterans of War Post 878. 
He enjoyed sports and was a coach in basketball and football. James enjoyed taking his family to Minnesota Twins games and trips to  Lake Okoboji. He really enjoyed his family, especially the grandchildren’s activities. He was passionate about education and encouraged his family to go on in school.
Survivors include his wife, Lorine, Blooming Prairie; children, Diane (Allen “Butch”) Anderson, Blooming Prairie, David (Judy) Thorn, Winona, Sheryl (Chris) Mans, Blooming Prairie; 10 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; cousins; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two children, one brother, and one sister.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 11, 2010, at St. Columbanus Church in Blooming Prairie with the Rev. William Becker officiating. Friends may call from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at Worlein-Blooming Prairie Funeral Home and at the church one half hour prior to the service on Thursday. Interment is at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Winona. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 878 and American Legion Post 9 are in charge of military rites.
