Bernard Ulwelling

Bernard L. “Benny” Ulwelling, 89, of Austin, died Monday, March 29, 2010 at Sacred Heart Care Center.
Benny was born Sept. 1, 1920 in Johnsburg, Minn. to Louis and Catherine Ulwelling. The family moved to Austin when he was a teenager. Benny worked at Hormel until enlisting in the Army in 1942. He was in Europe and returned to Camp McCoy, Wis. in November of 1945. Benny returned to work at Hormel and retired in 1982.
On Sept. 16, 1940, he was united in marriage to Vera McGee. They enjoyed traveling to Army reunions and visiting family across the United States. For many years, Benny enjoyed golf and organized an annual tournament for friends. He was a past member of the VFW and American Legion. Benny enjoyed bowling, golf and playing cards with friends.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Vera, Austin; daughters, Janet (Ken) Ruzek, Brooklyn Park, Judy (Jeff) Lee, Rochester; daughter-in-law, Katie Ulwelling, Austin; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Leona Walburn, Austin.
Benny was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, and his son, Dan Ulwelling.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at Mayer Funeral Home with Father Joe Fogal officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at Mayer Funeral Home on Thursday. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery with military rites by American Legion Post #91.
The honorary casket bearers will be Benny’s grandchildren.
Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
