Students organize dance for Haiti

High school students hope to dance all the way to the bank this weekend.

Members of a Delta Epsilon Chi (DECA) chapter at Austin High School are planning a dance this Saturday evening to benefit Haiti relief. The student marketing, management and entrepreneurship club hopes to raise $1,000 during the event to donate to the American Red Cross.

Students from any high school are welcome to attend the dance, which is from 8:30 p.m. to midnight at the Austin Elks Club, 102 First Ave. NE. Tickets are $5 at the door, and attendees are encouraged to donate more if they can.

“It’s going to be a really fun, awesome event,” said one of the four student event organizers, Marni Surdy, AHS junior. “We’ve had so much help from our community and that’s why we are able to do this so quickly.”

Surdy hopes the music, donated by Imagery Sound, 103 Sixth St. NW, will be a big draw.

“Students love dances here at Austin High School, but some people don’t go because the administration controls the music,” she explained. “Because this is not an actual school event, we have complete control over the music, and kids will love that.”

AHS student and Imagery Sound DJ Janson Baldus will do the honors, Surdy said.

While the music is a free-for-all, Surdy said parents don’t need to worry. There will be DECA advisors, Elks members and high school mothers serving as chaperones.

Other area businesses that have teamed up with DECA are Games People Play, 701 18th Ave. NW, which is printing and donating tee-shirts and the Elks Club, which is donating their event space.

The DECA students are still looking for area businesses to donate concessions or pledge to match donations.
