It’s Little Red Riding Hood, with a twist

Everybody knows the story.

Once upon a time, there was a little girl who lived in a village near the forest. Whenever she went out, the little girl wore a red riding cloak. So, they called her Little Red Riding Hood, and she had dreams of being a rock n’ roll starlet. She had to be cautious of the Big Bad Wolf, a curious fellow who actually believed that he was Elvis.

Perhaps most remember the childhood tale a bit different, but a local theater group takes this new twist on the classic this weekend.

Matchbox Children’s Theatre presents the 50’s style doo-wop musical “Little Red,” based on the Little Red Riding Hood fairytale, at the Paramount Theatre beginning Friday.

“It’s a very fun musical,” said director Angela Donovan, who directs her fourth Matchbox play with “Little Red.”

The cast of nine — three adults and six children — has been rehearsing for about a month, she said.

A number of familiar faces will be on stage.

Megan Poczos, most recently seen as the Rat in November’s “Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures,” plays Little Red. Director of “Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures” and Matchbox actor, Cameron Davis, plays the wood cutter. Matchbox Children’s Theatre director Leland Bissinger plays the wolf. Brenna Nordeng, who was Mole in “Mr. Toad’s Mad Adventures,” plays Mother.

Five newcomers will also grace the Paramount Theatre stage, making their Matchbox theatrical debut in this production.

The one-hour doo-wop musical is meant to be humorous, interesting and entertaining for children and adults, Donovan said.

“I think it’s going to be a great show,” she said.

Matchbox Children’s Theatre is a non-profit organization that performs three regular productions for children each year as well as the Halloween Warm-Up every October.

The Paramount Theatre box office opens one hour before each performance and seating begins 30 minutes before the play begins.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children. All seats are General Admission and tickets are also available at Hy-Vee and Sterling Main Street.
