Dorothy Felton

Dorothy Linnea Felton, 89, died Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010 at St. Marks Lutheran Home.
Dorothy was born on Feb. 2, 1921, in Hayfield, Minn., the ninth child of Charles and Betty (Ahlberg) Anderson in a family of 12 children. A homemaker, she also worked at Hormel Foods for 38 years, retiring in 1978. She married Steffen “Steve” Shurson on March 4, 1939. They were the parents of three sons, Karl DuWayne, David Steffen and Tommy Joe. Steve passed away on Jan. 13, 1950. Dorothy married Corliss Felton on June 29, 1953. He passed away on April 3, 1998.
She was a volunteer and member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church, baking cakes for funerals, helping with the church bazaar, dressed in her Scandinavian garb. She worked in the kitchen of the St. Olaf Diner at the Mower County Fair and also during the National Barrow Show. She volunteered at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home, going on outings with residents to the library, on shopping trips, van rides, casinos, restaurants and Como Zoo. She helped at Bingo games and mid-week worship services. She assisted residents in the dining room at St. Mark’s during the noon hour.
Dorothy was a nominee for the Jefferson Awards in 2007. She was presented with a Certificate of Excellence for outstanding contribution and unselfish dedication at a celebration in Rochester at the International Event Center on April 19. She also received many certificates of appreciation from the Women of the Moose for her help and service as an officer. Dorothy enjoyed her family, her work and volunteering. She especially looked forward to the Anderson Family Reunion every July in Owatonna. Dedicated to her family and her church, Dorothy was truly grateful for her life on this earth. She considered herself blessed and thanked God daily.
Survivors include son, Tommy Joe; daughter-in-law, Marlene Shurson; six grandchildren, Scott (Shelly) Shurson, Julie (Kevin) McAdams, Carrie (Darrin) Giesler, Eric (Maureen) Shurson, Jon Shurson, and Tim (Nancy) Shurson; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Darlene, Lois, Georgia and Marcella Anderson; many nieces and nephews. 
Preceding her in death were her parents; two husbands; sons, Karl and David; two grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Judith Shurson; eight brothers and three sisters. 
A Memorial Service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 at  St. Mark’s Lutheran Home with Associate in Ministry, Todd Portinga and Chaplain Pamela Aandahl Solberg officiating, and Neal Erickson providing music. Interment will be at Oakwood Cemetery at a later date. 
Memorials are preferred to St. Olaf Lutheran Church or St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.
