They were missing their top two scorers, but the Hayfield girls basketball team pushed Winona Cotter to the brink as the Vikings fell 87-78 in triple overtime in Hayfield Monday.
Hayfield (15-5 overall) took a 65-63 near the end of the second OT after Beth Felten hit two free throws, but Cotter freshman Paige Germes went the length of the court in 4.1 seconds and hit a runner from just inside the three-point line to send the game to a third OT, where Cotter (9-7 overall) took over.
While Kiley Severson was out with an injury, Jordyn Krekling missed the game with an illness for Hayfield. Kayla Garness picked up some of the scoring slack with 18 points and three other Vikings scored in double figures.
“A lot of kids got some valuable minutes in a tough game,” Hayfield head coach Fred Kindschy said. “Hopefully, come playoff time they’ll be confident and make us a better scoring team.”
