BLOOMING PRAIRIE — The Awesome Blossoms had to slow it down before they could turn it on.

After struggling with eight turnovers in the first eight minutes, Blooming Prairie’s boys basketball team calmed down and finished with a 63-33 win over Medford, which has now lost 12 straight, in BP Monday.

BP (7-13 overall) led 18-4 after a lay-up by Dudley Smith with 8:15 left in the first half, but its offense didn’t truly get going until the second half, where it scored 36 points and had just three turnovers until the bench was completely cleared in the last couple of minutes.

“We started slow but then we settled down and ran our set plays and got it inside,” said Blossoms junior center Cooper Nelson, who had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocked shots. “If I don’t have a good look, I can kick it out to one of the shooters to knock it down.”

While Nelson took over inside, the BP guards did their job in forcing 30 turnovers on the night.

“We always want to be the aggressor on both sides of the court,” BP head coach John Bruns said. “We wanted to put some pressure on the passing lanes and put some pressure on their ball handlers and we did that.”

Justen Ingvalson had five points, four rebounds, five steals and five assists and Robert Hofius had 13 points, five rebounds and three steals.

Hofius was instrumental in turning plenty of turnovers into easy scores for his squad.

“I was on the backside and playing a little off so I could read the cross court passes,” Hofius said. “(On offense) I had to come out and be a leader, stay under control and keep the turnovers down and the points going.”

Medford (2-17 overall) never got within 15 in the second half and BP pulled its starters about half-way through the second half.

Nelson said his guards are getting the job done and he thinks the Blossoms are peaking at the right time.

“Justen’s great at passing the ball inside and Robert’s great at driving and making the big guy come and help. A lot of times I’m wide open off his penetration,” Nelson said. “The team’s really coming along the past few games and when playoffs come I think we’ll be ready to make a run.”
