The Super Bowl kick-off happened a few days early for students at Austin Catholic Schools this year.

The schools staged a “Super Religion Bowl” Friday as a finale to Catholic Schools Week.

The game, in which select students participated, included a quiz bowl as well as relay race activities.

“This is the first time we’ve done this,” said Austin Area Catholic Schools director Mary Holtorf. “It was awesome. The kids really enjoyed it.”

Pacelli High School religion teacher and campus ministry director Jeff Austin was the event’s emcee.

He challenged teams to name a prayer of the Rosary other than the Hail Mary and the Our Father, as well as to describe the purpose of the liturgical season of Advent. Correct answers given were the “Glory Be” and “preparation for the birth of Jesus.”

He also asked where St. Peter’s tomb is located and also, from scripture, what was one of the plagues cast upon the Egyptians. Students answered these correctly with “Vatican City” and “locusts.”

Austin did throw a trick question in too.

“Where are the Saints?” he asked.

A student answered correctly, “in heaven.”

“That’s right,” he said. “This is the religion bowl. We’re not talking about the Saints in New Orleans right now.”
