Southland freshman Nick Schmitz capped off a career night by converting a steal for a bucket to put his team up 65-62 lead with 20 seconds left and the Rebel defense held of Caledonia’s last attempt in a win Friday in Adams.
Schmitz finished with a career-high 22 points and fellow freshman Mike Goergen, who scored 12, also played a big role as he hit driving lay-up to put the Rebels (5-4 overall) up 63-62.
“It was a great basketball game,” Southland head coach Jon Thalberg said. “The atmosphere was fabulous with our fans and it was one of those games were it was too bad somebody had to lose.”
Neither team led by more than 10 on the night and it was a back-and-forth contest all the way through.
Southland has now won five straight but the win over the Warriors is their biggest victory so far.
“They’re starting to believe in the system and they’re starting to believe in themselves,” Thalberg said.
Southland scoring: Schmitz, 22; Chris May, 13; Goergen, 12; Alan May, 6; Mitch Nagele, 4; Zach Heimer, 4; Clint Bergene, 4
Caledonia scoring: Isaac Fruechte, 20
