On the heels of its worst loss of the season, the Austin boys basketball team delivered its most impressive victory with a 77-39 win over Rochester Century in Packer Gym Friday.

Austin (5-8 overall, 4-6 Big Nine) had seven players score at least eight points and the team shot 66 percent from the field, while forcing 29 Panther turnovers.

“Everything went right and it was just one of those nights. We played well and Century didn’t,” Austin head coach Kris Fadness said. “Everybody got in on the act.”

Senior point guard T.J. Fritz controlled the offensive tempo for Austin as he scored 10 points and dished out nine assists to go along with four steals.

“It makes it a lot easier (when everyone’s moving). Getting those back doors wide open under the hoop is good,” Fritz said.

Fritz said the Packers’ seniors had a little get-together after their 71-53 loss at Faribault Tuesday night and it made all the difference on Friday.

“Faribault was an embarrassment, but the seniors talked afterwards and we said we’ve got to get things straight and we did that tonight,” Fritz said. “We talked about consistency. All season we’ve played one good half and tonight it was a complete game.”

Austin got a big lift off the bench from junior guard Matt Duren, who had eight points, four steals and three rebounds and freshman center Tom Aase, who scored four points.

“We got some nice bench support from Matt and Tom in their first extensive minutes. They did a nice job and gave us energy,” Fadness said.

Century (10-5, 6-4 Big Nine) scored first to go up 2-0, but the Packers got back-to-back lay-ups from Joey Swatfager, who had 11 points, seven steals and five assists, to set the tone for a night that was full of easy buckets for Austin. The Packers rallied to a16-6 lead and they led 46-25 at the break.

If there was any doubt, Austin scored the first 13 points of the second half to take a 61-25 lead after Connor Gunderson, who had 14 points, and three blocked shots, drilled a three.
