The Packer girls hockey team played even with the No. 11 team in the state for most of the night, but they couldn’t close it out.

Mankato West walked away with a 5-4 overtime win when Hanna Rehome scored on the Scarlets’ second shot of the extra period to end it.

Austin (8-10-2 overall, 4-6-1 Big Nine) never attempted a shot in OT but closed out regulation in dramatic fashion as Carley Grunewald scored a shorthanded goal with 23 seconds left to force overtime.

“We played a great game and we skated hard,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said.

Audrey DeVries had 49 saves for Austin.

Penalties hurt the Packers on the night as they had nine penalties for 18 minutes, while the Scarlets (13-5 overall) were penalized four times for eight minutes.

“Penalties killed us tonight, that’s a whole period where we were shorthanded,” Bray said.

The Packers did well on special teams, scoring on two of their four power plays and stopping West on seven of their nine power plays.

“Ashley Arhart, Kennedy Thompson, Kristen Stanek and Carley Grunewald did an excellent job on the penalty kill,” Bray said.
