James A. Shaw, 84, of Riceville, Iowa died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Wis.
James Arnold Shaw was born at home at home in rural Wright County, Iowa on Sept. 22, 1925, the son of Joseph and Sadie (Hefte) Shaw. He was the fifth of 10 children. He attended country school until the eighth grade at which time he started working as a hired hand for various farmers.
On Jan. 20, 1946, he married Cora E. Christensen at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Shortly after they married, he enlisted in the Army. In 1951, Jim and Cora started farming in the Hubbard and Union areas but settled on a place of their own in 1971 just north of Riceville. Together they raised five children. James retired from farming in 1996 and moved to “town.” James (Jim) enjoyed reading, fishing, visiting friends and family and traveling.
He is survived by his dear friend, Janice Regan of Cresco, Iowa; his five children, Beverly Gardner of Strawberry Point, Dean (Marti Wade) Shaw of Alexandria, Va., Dan (Roxanne) Shaw of Altoona, Wis., Barbara (Randy) Schnepper of Rosemount, Minn. and Beth (William) Gorton of Urbana, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Annie (Hollis) Weller, Jesse Gardner, Nicholas (Jessica) Shaw, Christopher Shaw, Nathan (Stacy) Shaw, Justin Reiter, Erin Schnepper, Richard Schnepper, Jared Gorton, Hannah Gorton, Jacob Gorton, Emma Gorton, and Tyler Gorton; two great-grandchildren, Matthew Shaw and William Shaw; four sisters, Bernice Lindsay, Caroline Neve, Evelyn Engelman, and Eldoris Lindsay; and three brothers, Donald Shaw, Robert (Pam) Shaw, and Orlan (Carol) Shaw.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cora Shaw; parents, Joseph and Sadie Shaw; sister, Hazel Streitilmeir; brother, Wayne Shaw; and son-in-law, Thomas Gardner.
 Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 29, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Riceville, Iowa with Pastor Michael Parris officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery in Riceville. Military Honors will be conducted by the Roy Gue Post 244. Friends may call on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville and also one hour prior to services at the church.
