Dorothy Bierne

Dorothy Ann Bierne, 82, of Austin and formerly of North Mankato died Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010 at Austin Medical Center.
Dorothy Ann Knutson was born March 18, 1928 to Lewis S. and Agnes C. (Mortenson) Knutson in Minneapolis. She graduated from Patrick Henry High School at the age of 17, as she was moved ahead a grade. She attended Hamline University where she earned a Teacher’s Certificate. She then taught a few years in the Milbank, S.D. area. Dorothy was united in marriage to her husband of 52 years, Eugene P. Bierne on July 15, 1950 in Minneapolis. After marriage, they moved to Mankato.  When their son, David, started school Dorothy returned to college at Mankato State College and earned a bachelor’s in education. She taught first grade in the Mankato School System for many years. While teaching full-time, she earned a master’s in elementary education. 
Dorothy enjoyed reading, her family and traveling. She and her husband enjoyed wintering in Florida. She was active in the Bend of the River Captain’s Crew and had served as queen for one term.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Dr. David Bierne of Austin; sister, Marlys (John) Paulson; grandson, Bryan Bierne; granddaughter, Kelly Bierne; great- granddaughter, Emma Gorvin; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene in 2002; her parents, and one brother. 
She will be missed.
 Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with the Rev. Jay Dahlvang officiating. Burial will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Wednesday.
Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
