Art center needs participants for ‘starving artist sale’

Starving artists, and those who are well-fed too, are invited to sign up for a sale taking place later this winter.

The Austin Area Art Center is looking for artists who would like to participate in its Second Annual Starving Artist Sale on Saturday, March 6 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the main hallway of Oak Park Mall.

Last year’s event — which featured only member vendors —was the highest grossing sale yet for the non-profit center, said member and sale coordinator Linda Draper.

“So we decided to open it up to everyone. We’d hate to leave out anyone who is creative,” she said.

Sales will be run through the art center, with 80 percent of sales commission being paid to respective artists by April 2.

Artists can set their own prices, but the art center hopes to keep most prices below $50 to keep the event shopper-friendly.

In addition to shopping, patrons will be able to create art at the sale as well, as one artist who is already on board is abstract painter Evgeny Rogozin, Draper said.

Rogozin, who is from Russia, is known for his community abstract work that he has done on-site with the public during events.

Rogozin will display a canvas, offer supplies and a subject matter for the community to leave their mark — in paint —  on a piece of abstract art.

One piece that now hangs at the art center was created by Rogozin and community-members at last year’s Art Walk. The theme of that work is Austin.

Other artists, of course, will not be required to work on site.

“It’s a good opportunity for people to sell art that has been accumulating in their attics and garages, and there are still a couple months to create more work to bring in,” Draper said.

The Austin Area Art Center is a non-profit organization that has provided a venue and network for area artists to show and sell their work for more than 50 years. They currently have more than 50 members.

Table space is $10 for members and $15 for non-members, and the sale will be canceled if not enough artists register by Feb. 20.
