Tartan knocks off Packers on second day of Merchants Holiday Tournament

The Titans came out firing and they finally found their mark in the second period as they beat the Austin girls hockey team 4-1 on the second day of the Austin Merchants Holiday Tournament at Riverside Arena Tuesday.

Tartan (3-8-1 overall) scored three times over a seven minute span the second period and it attempted 55 shots on goal in the contest. Andrea Heller scored twice in the second for Tartan as she knocked in a slap shot on Austin goalie’s Audrey DeVries’ stick side to make it 2-1 and she drove in an unassisted attempt to make it 4-1.

“We’re just not forechecking hard and we had some defensemen pinching when they’re not supposed to be pinching,” Austin head coach Denny Bray said. “Audrey’s keeping us in this thing. She’s playing out of her mind. She’s really focused and she’s really playing with a lot of heart.”

DeVries finished with 51 saves, after stopping 49 shots on Monday.

For the second straight game, the Packers (6-8-1 overall) couldn’t come up with any second chance shots as they tallied 26 shots on goal.

“We’ll get the puck down in the zone, one girl will lose it and they come right out with it,” Bray said.

Austin’s lone goal came in the first period when Kennedy Thompson broke into open ice, pulled up on a Tartan defender and skated through the gap to slap one in.

It was one of Austin’s few good looks as Tartan controlled the puck throughout the morning.

“We’ve got to keep the puck in the offensive end,” Bray said. “We hardly ever have more time in the offensive zone than our opponent, especially against better teams. We’ve got to play better on offense.”

Austin will play Northern Edge Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. in Riverside Arena in the seventh place game of the tournament. The tournament’s title game will take place at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
