With a field full of strong competitors, the Austin gymnastics team stole the show at the Packer Winter Warm-Up meet at the YMCA in Austin Saturday.
Austin came through with a season-high score of 135.5 to win the eight-team invite.
Austin head coach Mark Raymond said the team was pleased when it broke a score of 133 earlier in the week, and now that they’ve broken the 135-point mark, it can aim even higher.
“Now that we’ve done it again, we know it wasn’t a fluke last time. This is something we can build on and it’ll boost us for the rest of the season,” he said. “This is getting to be a tougher meet and we had some great gymnasts out there. I’m happy with how we did.”
Eighth grader Sela Fadness finished second all-around with a total score of 35.2 for Austin. She won the vault when she landed a yurchenko tuck, which required her to hand spring off the vault and perform a one and a half flip. She was the last gymnast to perform the vault on the day.
“I was a little nervous going into it, but I just stuck my head up high and went for it,” said Fadness, who scored a 9.25 on the vault. “I haven’t been doing (that vault) for a long time. It’s kind of new, but it’s fun.”
The Packers did well as a team on the vault as senior Sabrina Snater tied for fourth with a 9.00, Katy Jorgenson scored an 8.75 and Carolyn Hackel notched an 8.7.
Sabrina Snater took fourth in the floor exercise with a 9.2 and Fadness took second with a 9.3 after she scored a 7.6 on the balance beam.
“Coming back out of not having a very good beam I was just going to hit it and I smiled the whole time,” Fadness said.
Sabrina Snater led Austin on the beam with a score of 8.2 and Fadness tied for third in the uneven bars with a 9.05.
The meet included Rochester John Marshall, Rochester Century, Rochester Mayo, Farmington, Richfield, Stewartville, and Caledonia.
