Frances Elizabeth Beland, 99, of Austin, died Monday, Nov. 30, 2009 at Sacred Heart Care Center where she was a resident.

    Frances was born Feb. 4, 1910 in Loda, Ill. to William A. and Kathryn I. (Ryan) Beland. Her family moved to Iowa when she was a small child. Frances grew up near Osage and Stacyville.

    Frances graduated from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Minneapolis and served as a nurse cadet during WWII. She worked as a nurse for many years in Minneapolis. 

    She enjoyed playing cards, bingo, reading and exercising every day.

    Survivors include her sisters, Joan Schmidt, Rochester, Phyllis Schmidt, Stacyville, Iowa; 22 nieces and nephews.

    She is preceded in death by her parents, William and Kathryn Beland; brothers, Robert Beland, William J. Beland, Ralph Beland; sisters, Lucille Wright, Irene Beland, Margaret Heimer.

    A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009 at Sacred Heart Care Center with Father Donald Zenk officiating. Friends may call one hour before the service at the care center on Saturday. Interment will be in Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville, Iowa.
